Diana Nyad shares the epic playlist that kept her motivated on her swim from Cuba to Florida

TED Blog

Diana Nyad swam 110 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, a journey that took her just under 53 hours last September. In today’s talk, Nyad gives a vivid account of what it was like to be out in the water, making her fifth attempt at this swim — one she first tried in 1978 when she was 28 years old. So how did she make it through the jellyfish, the unpredictable currents and the darkness “like you’ve never seen?”

[ted_talkteaser id=1896]The answer, as Nyad reveals in today’s talk: a deep belief in perseverance, and some really good songs. Nyad says that singing a playlist to herself over and over again — anchored by John Lennon’s “Imagine” played more than 100 times — helped tremendously.

We asked Nyad to share the motivational playlist that propelled her through the swim and all the training it required. She obliged. As…

Resolution #1: Make time to make art.
From the talk:
Young-ha Kim’s “Be an artist, right now!”
“There are hundreds of reasons why we can’t be artists right now,” says Korean author Young-ha Kim—that is, all the reasons we invent when we’re too scared or intimidated. But, Kim reminds us, “We are all born artists.” Unleash those suppressed artistic impulses: take an acting class, buy some paint, or just sit with a notebook and write like crazy.

Thanks to you for having contributing, in 2013, to my BLOG.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 21,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Are you Ready to live your dreams in 2014 ?

Are you Ready to live your dreams in 2014 ?

Are you Ready for 2014 ?

2013 was a great change for me and my family moving from Belgium to South Florida.
We have taken some risks, leaving our comfort zone, our friends, our family, our routine.
We have decided not to dream our life but to live our dreams.
We didn’t want to regret anything and we wanted to show new horizon to our kids.
We are so happy to have taken this tough decision as we all learn every day so many things, from this experience.

We are ready for 2014 now.
We will open the book.
Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

So, today, it is the perfect day for you to start living your dreams too.
This is what I wish you.
